Limpopo dam levels have improved this week

A weekly report on dam levels issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation in Limpopo have shown an improvement of the province’s dam levels from last week’s 87.7% to 88.4% this week. During a similar period last year, the province’s overall storage capacity stood at 87.9%. Overall, the Limpopo Province water levels have improved by 0.7% from last week to this week.

This improvement means that the available water in the province as of this week is at 1 308.2 cubic metres out of a full capacity of 1 480.10 cubic metres.

The Polokwane Water Supply System with dams supplying water to Polokwane and surrounding areas is currently at 103.7%, an increase from last week’s 100.8%. This is a great improvement as compared to last year at this time when the system stood at 99.7%.

Several dams slightly increased. Mokolo Dam increased by 0.7%. Last year it stood at 100.9%, and this week it is at 101.6%. Doorndraai Dam also slightly increased by 1.8%. Last week it was 72.4%, and it is 74.2% this week. Glen Alpine Dam also slightly increased, it was 98.5% last week. It is 99.8% this week. It has increased marginally by 1.3%.

Mutshedzi Dam stayed the same at 96.3%. It was also at 96.3 last year this time. Vondo Dam is at 100.9%. It has stayed at the same level this week and last week. Nandoni Dam has also remained unchanged from last week to this week at 101.4%.

Tours Dam has taken a dip from last week’s 100.3% to this week’s 99.5%. It dropped by 0.8%. Klaserie Dam has also heavily dipped. It was 101.3% last week, and this week it is at 100.2%. It has dropped by 1.1%. Nsami Dam was 54.2% last week but this week it is standing at 53.7%. It has dropped, only by 0.5%.

The report has also revealed that water storage in different District Municipalities is at satisfactory high levels. In Vhembe District Municipality, the water levels at the dams are at sitting comfortably at 100.9% this week, as compared to last week’s 101.0%. It has dropped by 0.1%. Sekhukhune District Municipality water levels have increased by 1.4%. They were 100.5% last week and they are standing at 101.9% this week. In Capricorn District Municipality, the water levels have slightly increased this week by 99.2% from last week’s 98.3%.

Despite the improvement in the province’s water levels, the Department of Water and Sanitation has reiterated its call to residents to continue using water sparingly. The communities are also encouraged to report any water leaks and water infrastructure vandalism to local municipalities.
