Suspect arrested for Sundumbili attempted murder

On 24 February 2017, Nyoni detectives and Phoenix Tactical Response Team arrested a 19-year-old suspect for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm. It is alleged that on 31 January 2016, a 27-year-old-victim attended a wedding in the area when the suspects attacked and assaulted him at Nsongweni Reserve, Sundumbili. A case of attempted murder was opened at Sundumbili police station for further investigation. During an investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had left the area. He was traced and arrested whilst hiding at Dalton Hostel, Durban. A firearm believed to have been used to commit the offence was found in his possession, a 9mm pistol and 10 live rounds of ammunition. The firearm will be subjected for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of other crimes. The suspect appeared at Sundumbili Magistrates' Court yesterday for possession of unlicensed firearm and will appear today on the attempted murder charge.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauded the members for their efforts that led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the firearm. "We will make sure that our members investigate the case properly so that the suspect can be successfully prosecuted," he said.
