SCHOLARS MEET IN HAVANA TO PREPARE VOLUME ON AFRICAN HISTORY

The International Scientific Committee of the 9th Volume of the General History of Africa was opened today here seeking to foster A GREATER understanding of African culture.

The cultural centre Casa de las Americas hosted a large number of scholars from different countries who make up this committee that study and validate the contributions of dozens of authors to prepare this 9th Volume on the General History of Africa.

According to specialists, important data on African studies was gathered and many of the speeches that represent a 'library' from the colonial times helped the writers to become direct heirs of that history and to handle the challenge of owning those traditions.

Yolanda Wood, professor, researcher, as well as art and history critic at the University of Havana, referred to the teaching of the General History of Africa in Cuba and its presence in the programs of our educational system.

She also mentioned that the book will be launched this year and sent to libraries, research centres and other cultural and educational institutions.

The International Scientific Committee of the 9th Volume of the General History of Africa will run this week with sessions in Casa de las Americas.

The closing ceremony of the Scientific Committee is scheduled for January 28th with a concert by Ray Lema and guests, from the group of artists supporting the General History of Africa.
