Operation Vala Konke promises a safer festive season in Gqeberha

Festive Season operations continued during the weekend in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro with police and law enforcement agencies clamping down on offenders who disregard the law and flout rules and regulations pertaining to the metro’s by-laws.

During the weekend from 23 December 2022 until 26 December 2022, roadblocks, blue light patrols throughout the metro and taverns were visited to ensure that they comply with the Liquor Act. A total of 28 suspects were arrested for offences which included murder, drunken driving, possession of drugs, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property among other offences.

On Saturday, 24 December 2022 at approximately 21:00 at Voisen Road Helenvale, a 30-year-old man was stabbed multiple times at home.  The complainant and his mother were arguing about money that was stolen and he accused the suspect. The suspect attacked the complainant and stabbing him several times. A case of attempted murder was opened and suspect, aged 35 years, was arrested.

On Sunday, 25 December 2022 at about 03:00, SAPS Gelvandale arrested a 40-year-old suspect on a charge of murder.  It is alleged that Kevin Brown (deceased) 47-years-old was drinking with friends in Blesbok Street, Helenvale when a fight broke out and the deceased was stabbed in the neck. He collapsed and died in the street. The suspect was arrested on the scene.

In another unrelated murder in Gelvandale, on Sunday 25 December 2022 at approximately 03:20 in Closemore Cres, Extension 6, the deceased Renaldo Bailey (22) was with friends drinking when Bailey and his girlfriend argued. She allegedly stabbed him in the chest. The deceased was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injury.  Police are searching for the girlfriend who ran away after the incident.

 

Police are warning people to act responsibly when enjoying themselves during this festive period. Alcohol and drunken behaviour contribute largely to crimes such as assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, murder and attempted murders.
