Off-duty Anti-Gang Unit members arrest suspect with illegal firearm

GQEBERHA – Having a thorough knowledge of your policing environment, is advantageous when dealing with criminals in certain gang spots in the Northern areas in Gqeberha.

On Saturday, 23 April 2022 at about 17:45, two Anti-Gang Unit members were on their work in their private vehicle when they spotted three males (one, a well-known gang member) standing in Highfield Road in Schauderville. The males were about to cross the road when the members stopped their vehicle. One person hurriedly crossed the road when the members alighted from the car. The members ordered the person to return and while searching them, the 31-year-old known alleged gangster pulled out a firearm from the front of his pants and threw it on the ground.

A 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition and a cellphone was confiscated. The suspect was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Ownership of the firearm is yet to be established. The firearm will be sent to ballistics for analysis.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Gqeberha magistrate court on Monday, 25 April 2022.
