Mining sector called to put safety first

Pretoria: Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has urged the mining sector to ensure the safety of its workers following the death of a miner.

Kagiso Rabolo, a winch operator originally from Botswana, was fatally injured on Wednesday morning at Sibanye Gold's Driefontein mine.

"We continue to urge the mines to place great emphasis on matters of health and safety, particularly in this last quarter of the year when incidents are known to increase.

"All mines should continuously aim for zero harm and ensure every mineworker returns home unharmed," Minister Zwane said.

The Chief Inspector of Mines has dispatched a team to the mine to conduct an in-loco inspection.

He has extended his condolences to the family and colleagues of Rabolo.
