Matrics Urged to Uphold Integrity as They Take NSC Pledge


Cape town: Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has called on the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) candidates to approach their final examinations with honesty, integrity, and a sense of responsibility to themselves and the country. Speaking at the National Senior Certificate Pledge Signing Ceremony held at Harry Gwala High School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Gwarube said the pledge represented a moment of deep meaning for learners across South Africa.



According to South African Government News Agency, the Minister expressed pride in participating in the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of the pledge as an affirmation of shared values in South Africa. She highlighted the significance of integrity, honesty, and accountability as foundational values for the education system and democracy.



Addressing the Class of 2025, Gwarube commended the learners for their perseverance through 12 years of schooling and urged them to face their examinations with integrity. She reminded learners of the importance of doing the right thing, even when not being watched, and emphasized that integrity is crucial in protecting the credibility of South Africa’s education system.



Gwarube warned against dishonesty during examinations, stating that it undermines both individuals and the entire education system. She described the pledge as a collective act of protection for the future, integrity, and reputation of the country.



The Minister stressed that education is about more than academic achievement; it is also about developing character and values. She encouraged learners to embody empathy, respect, and responsibility, noting that the nation’s future depends on principled citizens.



The Minister expressed hope that South Africa’s learners would contribute to a values-driven continent, highlighting the importance of integrity as a measure of leadership. She encouraged learners to write their final examinations with confidence and pride, emphasizing that hard work, honesty, and integrity will define their legacy.



Gwarube also wished the learners well for their valedictory ceremonies, urging them to celebrate integrity, effort, and resilience. She expressed gratitude to teachers and parents for their support, acknowledging their dedication and belief in the learners.
