Malaysian University Confers Honorary Doctorate on President Ramaphosa


Kuala lumpur: President Cyril Ramaphosa has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate in International Relations by the University of Malay in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The honour, which comes 35 years after the same institution awarded an Honorary Doctorate to Former President Nelson Mandela, was bestowed during a ceremony where President Ramaphosa delivered a public lecture.



According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa emphasized the significance of the honour, noting that it represents not just individual recognition but a tribute to South Africa’s transformative journey. He highlighted that the award acknowledges the country’s struggle for democracy and freedom, and the progress made in establishing a society based on equality and justice.



The President also reflected on the historical ties between South Africa and Malaysia, tracing back to the Southeast Asian slave trade. He noted the transformative impact of the early arrivals from Southeast Asia, who brought Islam and its message of equality to South Africa. Malaysia’s solidarity with South African freedom fighters during the apartheid era was also acknowledged, emphasizing the enduring relationship between the two nations.



President Ramaphosa stressed the importance of this shared history, highlighting it as a testament to the power of solidarity in overcoming past challenges and shaping a common future. He called for the strengthening of historical linkages and the celebration of the rich history that binds Malaysia and South Africa. The President urged the continuation of collaboration and mutual respect, urging both nations to deepen their friendship.



Expressing gratitude for the honorary doctorate, President Ramaphosa accepted it on behalf of South Africans, acknowledging the support of the Malaysian people and leadership. He concluded his address by advocating for continued friendship and peace between the two nations, invoking the spirit of the early Cape Malay community as the foundation of a free South Africa.
