JOHANNESBURG, A taxi operators association in Johannesburg has commended its members for helping the the police arrest a number of suspects believed to be involved in the gruesome rape and murder of a couple here at the weekend.
The Dobsonville, Roodepoort, Leratong Johannesburg Taxi Association has also set up a hotline for commuters to report incidents of rape, crime and violence along routes served by its members.
Eight suspects, including the man believed to be the taxi driver in the case, have been arrested.
The latest incident comes after several women reported last month they had been raped and robbed by occupants in two minibus taxis. In the incident early on Saturday morning, a couple was abducted after they were hit by a speeding taxi.
The taxi occupants pretended that they were taking them to the hospital. Thereafter, the man was made to watch while the woman was being gang-raped.
They were then stoned, set alight and left for dead just off Impala Road between Leratong and Lenasia on the west of Johannesburg.
The taxi association has pledged to train its drivers and rank stewards on customer care and gender sensitivity.
