Two suspects convicted for Elsies River murder in Bellville Commercial Court

On 19 July 2019 at about 16:50 victim Loretta Rubain (40) was laying in her room at H3 Springbok Place Balvinie Drive, Elsies River when she was called to the door by an unknown person and when she arrived at the front door she was shot twice in the chest and died instantly on the scene.

The son of the victim came running out and recognised the two suspects running away, who is part of a known gang grouping in Elsies River. There was no other eye witnesses and investigation was taken over by the Anti-Gang Unit Detective Team with Sergeant Oktober as lead investigating officer.

Due to the fast and effective investigative methods applied and the tasking of informers, the first suspect known as Johan Goliath @Katanga was arrested and a few days later a second suspect known as Jonathan Solomons @Luksman was arrested after endless follow up and tracing operations. Both appeared in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on 24 July 2019 and bail was opposed successfully, the case was transferred to the Bellville Commercial Court for trial and sentencing.

On 9 April 2021 both were found guilty of murder.

Accused 1

Johan Goliath (37) was sentenced to 7 years direct imprisonment.

Accused 2

Jonathan Solomons (32) was sentenced to 25 years direct imprisonment.

In court the family of the deceased as well as the community applaud the conviction and sentences of this two fearless gang members.

The Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Patekile commended the investigating team for their dedication and commitment in tracing and apprehending such heartless criminals and removing them from the community.
