Two suspects arrested on separate cases of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm inside a tavern

Harrismith: The police arrested a 31-year-old man from Intabazwe near Harrismith on Friday, 9 April 2021 at about 22:40 after following intelligence led information that he was carrying a firearm inside a certain tavern. A police official who was off duty requested backup from his colleagues and went to the tavern where the suspect ran into the toilet trying to hide the firearm but the police caught up with him. The 9mm Norinco pistol with five live ammunition was confiscated. The suspect is appearing before Harrismith Magistrates’ court for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

On Sunday, 11 April 2021 at about 17:00 Hlopheho Mokoena (27) of Tshiame D had an argument with another man (43) over dogs. The argument did not end well as the man pulled out a firearm and allegedly shot Mokoena in the body and was rushed to local hospital. The suspect was traced and arrested on 12 April 2021. He is expected to appear before Harrismith Magistrates’ court on 13 April 2021 facing charge of attempted murder.
