DURBAN – Police in Pinetown have arrested three suspects over the weekend for attempted carjacking.
In the first incident which happened on Saturday, 13 April 2019 at 23:00, an e-hailing services cab driver received a request to pick up three men from New Germany. When he arrived at Regal Crescent where he was supposed to pick up the three, they attempted to rob him.
The ever alert driver took his firearm and shot one suspect on the head and he died at the scene before firing two more shots of which one of them hit the second suspect. The third suspect hid on the back seat. The driver drove to KwaDabeka police station to report the incident. When he arrived at the police station, he saw the third suspect lying in the vehicle. The second suspect who was shot was taken to the hospital under police guard. The third suspect, a 23-year-old man was then arrested and charged with attempted carjacking.
In another incident which occurred on Sunday, 14 April 2019 at 16:50, an e-hailing services driver was on duty in New Germany when he was approached by two males who enquired about a trip to Fannin Extension in Clermont. When they got in the back seat of the car the driver noticed that they were both in possession of firearms. The suspects told the driver to drive into another direction contrary to the direction they said they were going to.
The driver then saw a marked police vehicle and flagged it down. He told the police that he had two passengers that are armed in his vehicle and they are directing him to go to an unknown destination. One of the police officers alighted from his vehicle and went to check. When he got to the vehicle, one suspect ran away and the other pointed the police officer with a firearm. The police officer reiterated and shot the suspect on his throat fatally wounding him.
While the police were still on the scene a vehicle approached the scene. It was driven by a female who identified herself as the sister of the deceased. The driver noticed a man who in the vehicle and identified him as a second suspect who tried to hijack him but ran away when they were confronted by the police. He had changed his clothes but was positively identified by the complainant. A 19-year-old man was then arrested on the spot. An unlicensed firearm was recovered from the deceased suspect.
Inquest dockets have also been opened for both incidents. The arrested suspects are expected to appear before Pinetown Magistrate Court soon.
