South Africans have been warned by a leading local economist to brace themselves for tougher times ahead as a result of rising inflation.
Dawie Roodt, the chief economist at the Efficient Group, a publicly traded financial services company, also warned here Wednesday that Whites were gradually becoming more exposed to unemployment and poverty.
He called on South Africans to hold on to their jobs and save money for the future.
"The reality is the South African economy is performing quite badly. And the reality also is that we have very high levels of unemployment and we have very high levels of poverty in South Africa as well.
"These sort of circumstances, and especially with rising food inflation, I am afraid the next couple of months and perhaps even longer, are going to be very hard for average South Africans."
