Police in South Africa's Gauteng province have arrested 18 people and seized firearms, including AK47 rifles, and stolen vehicles in a possible breakthrough against a hijacking gang.
The firearms were recovered during a routine crime prevention operation over the weekend in areas such as Diespsloot, Mamelodi, Johannesburg central business district, Ivory Park, Germiston and Alberton.
Four of the firearms, including AK47 rifles, were seized following a shoot-out police and suspects who had hijacked a truck transporting electronic equipment in Midrand, near Johannesburg, the police said Sunday.
Two vehicles used in the hijacking were found to have been stolen.
Gauteng police spokeperson Lungelo Dlamini said the 18 arrested suspects would be charged with various crimes, including truck hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms, murder and attempted murder.
