Police caution members of the community on drowning incidents

The South African Police Service in Limpopo caution members of the community about the escalating incidents of drowning around the Province after three people recently lost their lives in separate incidents.

In the Letsitele policing area outside Tzaneen, on 2019-01-23 at about 23:00, a 38-year-old man, Lucky Mathebula, allegedly drowned while fishing with his friend at Constantia farm.

The Police were informed about the incident and responded swiftly, the SAPS Search and Rescue Team was immediately activated and worked tirelessly until the body was retrieved.

Meanwhile, in the Mokwakwaila Policing area outside Tzaneen, the body of a 24-year-old man, Billy Masale Ramokgopa, was retrieved from the river after he allegedly slipped into Molototsi River on 2019-01-26 at around 23:00 while on his way home with a friend from a local liquor outlet.

In another incident, on 2019-01-25, the Police Search and Rescue Team retrieved a body of a 33-year-old man, Thinavhudzulo Ramadzhiela of Tshitomboni Village in Thohoyandou Policing area. The Police were summoned to Luvuvhu River by the community, after a passer-by noticed a body of a human being floating in the water.

Members of the community are advised to be cautious while at or crossing rivers or dams especially during this rainy season when the Province is experiencing heavy rainfalls. Let this be the responsibility of each and every citizen to share as much information about water safety as possible in order to prevent drowning.
