Minister Zizi Kodwa delivers 2023 Sport, Arts and Culture Budget Vote Speech, 9 May

Minister Kodwa to lead a series of activities during the 2023 budget vote debate week in Cape Town

As the Heritage, Sport, and Creative Sector continues to move from grants and relief mode to sustainable economic recovery trajectory, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) under the guidance of Minister Zizi Kodwa will present the 2023 Budget Vote Speech Debate on the 09th of May at the Good Hope Chambers in Cape Town at 14:00.

Together with the Deputy Minister, Ms Nocawe Mafu, Minister Kodwa will unpack and outline key achievements and challenges of the 2022-2023 financial year. The Budget Vote presentation will also provide a roadmap towards creating an enabling environment for the transformation, preservation, protection and promotion of sport, arts, and culture at all levels of participation in order to foster an active, winning, creative and socially cohesive nation.

NB: Due to limited space at the chambers, Members of the media will cover the vote via livestream services from the GCIS Imbizo Centre.

During the Budget Vote Week (08 – 10 May), the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with its entities and other stakeholders will host the following activities:

A visit to Robben Island Museum by Minister Zizi Kodwa on Monday, 08 May 2023 in the Western Cape at 09:00. The purpose of the visit is monitoring and evaluation to ascertain the state of the Museum.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will also on the 08th of May host community conversations at Nyanga Arts Centre, in Cape Town. Minister Zizi Kodwa and Deputy Minister Mafu will engage the Nyanga community and stakeholders on issues around sport, arts, culture, and heritage. The programme will run from 14:30 – 17:00.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will convene a post-Budget Vote media engagement to discuss key highlights of the Budget Vote. Led by Minister Kodwa, the briefing will take place on the 09th of May at the GCIS Imbizo Centre from 16:30. The media is invited to watch the proceedings at the Imbizo Centre from 14:00.

As part of the rigorous amplification of the 2023 Netball World Cup, Minister Zizi Kodwa and Deputy Minister Nocawe Mafu will lead the activation on Thursday, 10th of May at Table Mountain, Cape Town between 08h00 and 10h00. The activation is aimed at amplifying the efforts in bringing frenzy and jovial spirit to South Africans around the upcoming Netball World Cup on 28 July 2023, in Cape Town.

The Budget Vote Week activities will conclude with the Move4Health Programme scheduled to take place on the 10 May 2023 Mandela Park, Khayelitsha, Cape Town between 09:00 and 15:00. The programme is aimed at the promoting healthy and positive lifestyles.

“The 2023 Budget Vote Debate takes place during Africa Month, a month where we not only salute our forebears who founded the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) now African Union (AU) on the 25th of May 1963, but also highlight and celebrate our Africanness in a true Pan-African spirit”, said the Minister Zizi Kodwa.
