Media Statement from Mpumalanga Media Centre Corporate Communication South African Police Service

NELSPRUIT: The police in Mpumalanga are looking for a group of seven suspects who attacked a Home for the Disabled, on a farm near Balfour on Tuesday 28 February 2017. According to information at police disposal, a contract worker at the home was with his manager when at around 22:00, they heard a knock at the kitchen door. They looked through the window and saw three unknown men who told them to open the door or else they would shoot them.

At that time another four men were already inside. They demanded money, tied both victims with cable ties after having assaulted the contract worker with a crowbar and started searching the house. Seeing that they did not find anything, they then took the manager to her office and instructed her to write them a cheque of an undisclosed amount, took two cell phones and also demanded keys of a Toyota Quantum belonging to the home. The suspects then fled the scene using the Quantum after which the victims managed to untie themselves and called the police.

No arrest has been made so far and investigations are continuing. The Quantum was found abandoned along the road soon thereafter. Police are making an appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to contact Detective Constable Jabulani Madonsela at 071 036 6766 or to call the SAPS Crimeline at 08600 10111.
