The 2017 edition of the Africa Cup of Club hockey Championships gets underway this Saturday at the City Park in Nairobi with 19 teams, including 10 women's club sides, taking part in the continental competition.
The tournament, which will end on Jan 15, welcomed its first foreign team, the Sharkia clubs from Egypt, who arrived here Monday and held a light training session in the evening at the City Park grounds.
The Africa Hockey Federation awarded the hosting rights for the competition to Kenya after the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe pulled out from hosting the event as a result of financial constraints.
Kenya, which staged the competition in 2007 and 2009, will be represented by four teams, including the 2015 Kenya Hockey Union men's champions Butali Sugar Warriors, as well as Kenya Police, Orange Telkom, and Sliders.
Telkom Orange and Eastern Company from Egypt won the women's and men's titles respectively in the last edition held in Lusaka, Zambia.
