Home Affairs Launches Operation New Broom to Tackle Illegal Immigrants Challenge

Cape Town: The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, has unveiled Operation New Broom, a new initiative aimed at addressing the challenge of illegal immigrants occupying public spaces through the use of advanced technology to arrest, convict, and deport those found to be in violation of South Africa’s immigration laws.

According to South African Government News Agency, the first phase of this nationwide campaign was executed in District 6, Cape Town, Western Cape. During this operation, 25 individuals were apprehended for unlawfully occupying land that is designated for restitution to victims of historical forced removals. This marks the beginning of a series of operations intended to enhance the enforcement of immigration laws in urban centers across the country.

Operation New Broom utilizes biometric technology to verify the immigration status of suspects, thereby minimizing the potential for fraudulent documentation and strengthening legal cases against those found to be in violation. “Operation New Broom tackles an old issue with new energy and technology in urban areas across the country,” stated the Department of Home Affairs, highlighting their innovative approach to a longstanding problem.

Dr. Schreiber emphasized that the initiative is guided by a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, with a focus on both combating illegal activities and ensuring adherence to due process and legal compliance. He further noted the broader impact of the department’s digital transformation, which is evident in enhanced operations by the Border Management Authority (BMA) both at the borders and within the country.

The Minister issued a stern warning to individuals residing illegally in South Africa, urging them to voluntarily leave the country. “Our message to anyone who is in the country illegally is clear – voluntarily deport yourself now, before we arrest and prohibit you from entering or obtaining legal status in South Africa in the future,” he asserted.
