Hawks recover a firearm stolen at Mitchell’s Plain SAPS

WESTERN CAPE � Leroy Carelse (30) is appearing today at Khayelisha Priority Crimes Court on a charge of illegal possession of a stolen firearm which has been linked to a 2017 Mitchells Plain SAPS theft case.

The police acted on information received on the 05 July 2019, about a suspect allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm in Bontheuwel. A search was conducted on the alleged premises and illegal items such as mandrax tablets and a firearm and ammunition were found in Carelse's possession resulting in his arrest. He made his first court appearance on the 08 July 2019, and was granted R1 500 bail.

Preliminary investigation by the Hawks' National Firearm Task Team (NFTT) established that the seized firearm with its serial number filed of was part of the firearms that were stolen at Mitchells Plain SAPS on 21 August 2017. A total of three (3) firearms have been recovered out of the 16 that were allegedly stolen.

Meanwhile, on a separate and unrelated matter, 37-year-old Bonga Gela was sentenced by the same Court on 20 July 2019, for contravening the firearms control act 60 of 2000, explosives act 26 of 1956 and possession of suspected stolen property.

A joint intelligence driven operation was carried out by Crime Intelligence and Flying Squad at C Block, Site C Khayelitsha on 17 October 2017. During the search, the police found a R4 Rifle with 2 magazines and 28 rounds, a R5 Rifle with 2 magazines and 25 rounds, 9mm police firearm with a magazine and 12 rounds, explosive detonation wires, two bullet proof vest and various loose ammunition for different firearms.

Two occupants at the premises were arrested and all items were seized for further investigations. Bonga Gela was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and a further two years for possession of stolen property.
