Amateur boxing in the Free State has enjoyed significant assistance as one of the priority codes which are part of the Elite Athlete Support Programme of the FS Sport Science Institute. The MEC Leeto, announced on 20 April 2018 in her 2018/19 budget vote: The Department will embark on new projects for this financial year: The first one will be to celebrate the love that Nelson Mandela had for the sport of boxing.

The Department with the Free State Boxing Federation will host the Nelson Mandela Amateur Boxing Championships. In 2018 the country will celebrate the centenary of the first democratically elected President, Mr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. During his heyday Mr. Nelson Mandela maintained his physical fitness through boxing. In his autobiography it is mentioned that the great man did not enjoy the violence of boxing but admired the strategies used during the match.

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has joined hands with the Free State Boxing Organisation, SANABO and the Free State Academy of Sport to celebrate the birth date of the late Nelson Mandela by hosting the Nelson Mandela Amateur Championships on 20 July 2018.

The Nelson Mandela Boxing tournament will be hosted as follows:

Boxers will be entered in the following weight divisions;

Age classification 19 � 40 years:

46Kg - 49 Kg

49Kg - 52 Kg

52Kg - 56 Kg

56Kg - 60 kg

60Kg - 64 Kg

64Kg - 69 Kg

69Kg - 75 Kg

75Kg - 81 Kg

81Kg � 91 Kg

91 + Kg
