A total of four suspects were arrested by Umhlali Task Team during an intelligence driven operation aiming to trace their wanted suspects. On 15 January 2018, members conducted an operation in Umhlali policing precinct where two most wanted suspects were arrested and the Task Team also received intelligence about the other four wanted men at Empangeni area. They proceeded to Empangeni area where they managed to arrest two more men of which one was found with a rifle with ammunition. Two of the suspects managed to evade the arrest. Police investigations continue.
The firearm was checked and it was discovered that it was stolen during a house robbery incident at Odondolo Reserve, Matshana in October last year. The suspects had been sought by Umhlali detectives for crimes that they allegedly committed at Umhlali area and preliminary investigation revealed that they are a gang of six which also commit crimes in other areas such as Tongaat, Empangeni and Inanda. The gang has been notoriously terrorizing business people especially foreign nationals by committing business robberies and business burglaries. It is also alleged that during the commission of these offences they threatened victims with firearms and even raped the females. The four suspects will be charged for business robbery, house robbery, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearm. They will appear at the Umhlali Magistrate's Court soon.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauded the outstanding work performed by the Task Team which led to the arrest of the suspects. The seizure of the firearm from the hands of the criminals will prevent serious and violent crimes and saved innocent lives that would have been taken by these criminals during their criminal acts. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing for analysis to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other crimes and the suspects will also be linked to Empangeni house robbery, he said.
