Government has in a statement on Thursday assured the nation that the Fort Hare Centenary celebrations will continue as planned on Friday, at Fort Hare's Alice campus.
"Security agencies are on the ground at Fort Hare to ensure that the 100 year centenary celebrations are held in a safe and secure environment.
"Students grievances are being attended to and the University of Fort Hare management has responded to the immediate demands and will attend to outstanding demands requiring longer term intervention in due course," said a statement issued by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).
This comes after students protested at the university on Wednesday and infrastructure was vandalised.
Government condemned the violent protests and destruction of property.
"In response to yesterday's unfortunate protest actions, a number of suspects have been arrested. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority will continue to update on further arrests and prosecution of the suspects," said the GCIS.
It encouraged the nation to follow the centenary celebration proceedings on television and radio from 9am and on social media by following @GCISMedia, @SAGovNews and @GovZA on twitter.
