Eight illegal firearms removed from the community

DURBAN: An intelligence driven operation conducted by police officers from the King Cetshwayo District between 18 August 2022 and 21 August 2022, produced excellent results when they arrested six suspects for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as bribery. The suspects aged between 28 and 42 were arrested at Nkandla, Richards Bay, Eshowe, Esikhaleni, Kwa-Mbonambi and Mandlazini.

One of the arrested suspects was charged for bribery after he offered police a bribe of R1000-00 in order to secure the release of his friend who was arrested for being in illegal possession of a firearm. The police officers seized eight firearms, 65 rounds of ammunition and two cellphones. Police also recovered a stolen vehicle which was abandoned by the suspects when they spotted police approaching in KwaMbonambi. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in different Magistrates’ Courts for bribery as well as unlawful possession firearms and ammunition.

Members of the community are once again urged to assist police to rid their neighbourhoods of illegal firearms by reporting those who are in illegal possession of firearms. All information can be reported anonymously to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or on MySAPS app.
