Eden Cluster police embark on crime combatting operations over the long weekend

WESTERN CAPE – Eden Cluster police in the Southern Cape, conducted various crime combatting operations to safeguard communities from serious and violent crimes over the long weekend. These operations which included the closing down of drug and liquor outlets, stop and search operations, roadblocks, vehicle check points and patrols in crime hotspot areas commenced on Thursday 29 April 2022 and concluded on Sunday morning.

On Thursday, 29 April 2022 Rural Flying Squad and Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team (ECCCT) members embarked on an operation at the Oudtshoorn Taxi Rank. On arrival they searched a juvenile and they found 15 bankies of Tik and seven quarters of Mandrax Tablets. They confiscated the drugs and arrested the 14-year-old juvenile on a charge of possession of drugs.

The same team also followed up on information on drug activities near a school in Oudtshoorn earlier where they confiscated 90 bankies of dagga. They arrested a 22-year-old suspect on a charge of possession of drugs.

Furthermore, on the same day 29 April 2022, ECCCT and Uniondale Crime Prevention members, armed with a search warrant, pounced on a liquor out in the rural town Uniondale. A search of the premises ensued leading the police to confiscate 252 litres of liquor. Police arrested a 70-year-old suspect on a charge of selling liquor without a licence.

On Saturday 30 April 2022, ECCCT members in conjunction with Provincial Traffic officers conducted roadblocks and vehicle check points along the N2 highway and Knysna Way in George as part of ongoing road safety initiatives over the long weekend. The forces stopped and searched more than 100 motor vehicles and issued 15 fines for traffic related offences valued at R15 000-00.

Those arrested are expected to appear in various local courts on Tuesday, 03 May 2022 or once charged.

Western Cape police management commended these forces for their efforts in ensuring that the public are and feel safe during this period. High density patrols and similar operations will continue during the rest of the long weekend.
