Dambuza murder and rape accused to spend life terms in jail

Yesterday, , the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced Mofokeng Thabane (37) to life imprisonment for murder, life imprisonment for rape, five years for kidnapping and another five years for house breaking. His sentence came after the court heard how he committed the offences in the Dambuza area during 2016.

It is alleged on 25 December 2016, at 10:00, Sipho Thusi (40) was assaulted with a stick by the accused after an argument while they were consuming liquor. Thusi was taken to hospital after he sustained head injuries where he later died. The accused fled the scene after the incident. On the following day, 26 December 2016, at 04:00, at Dambuza, a 26-year-old victim was asleep at home when the accused broke into the house, dragged her out to his friend's house where she was raped. The victim managed to escape after the ordeal and reported the matter to her sister. Charges of murder and rape were opened at Plessislaer Police Station. The accused was arrested on 27 December 2016 and brought before court. His bail application was opposed and he was kept in custody until his sentencing.
