Attempted armed robbery suspect held, firearm seized

Potchefstroom: A 36-year-old suspect will appear in the Brits Magistrates' Court today, 2 March 2017 for illegal possession of firearm, ammunition, attempted armed robbery and attempted murder.

The suspect's appearance in court stems from his arrest on Tuesday, 28 February 2017 at a shopping complex in Mooinooi near Brits.

It is alleged that the suspect and his three accomplices driving a VW sedan, attempted to rob a cash in transit security vehicle. At the time of the incident, security officials were allegedly collecting money from one of the stores at the complex. The suspects allegedly fired a shot at the security officials and it allegedly hit one of them in the hand. Three suspects fled the scene with their vehicle. The fourth suspect was arrested at the scene by police who rushed to the scene after being alerted about the incident.

Upon the arrest, the suspect was found in possession illegal firearm and ammunition. No cash was taken during the incident. Investigation into the matter continues.
