Provincial Commissioner warns community against illegal mining

NELSPRUIT – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, sends a stern warning to the community urging them to refrain from participating in acts of illegal mining. His warning comes after three men, aged between 40 and 45, died underground at Nesta old gold mine in Sabie, on Saturday 12 September 2020, in an incident which is believed to be associated with illegal mining.

The men got trapped inside the mine when a portion of the mine shaft caved in on them. As a result, the matter was reported to the police and paramedics after the victims were brought to the surface by their friends, whereupon their arrival (police and paramedics) these men where certified dead. An inquest has been registered and preliminary investigations have since revealed that the men were part of a group who were conducting unlawful operations of digging minerals underground.

Lieutenant General Zuma, strongly condemns such acts and urges members of the public to desist from engaging in illegal activities as this might put their lives at risk.
