Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga has strongly condemned the senseless murder and attack of defenceless family members in Bethelsdorp and vowed that police will work around the clock to trace the perpetrators. We condemn the killing and attack in the strongest possible way. Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit (Gang Investigations) has started to follow leads after thoroughly combing the scene for clues to trace, track and arrest those responsible for this callous attack, said Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga early today.
According to police information, it is alleged that on 2nd February 2019 at about 12:40 the five victims were inside the house in Barberry Drive, Ext 32 in Bethelsdorp, when an unknown male entered the yard through the front gate. He started shooting towards the direction of the house through the open door. On entering the house, he continued shooting at the occupants. A 13-year-old boy sustained multiple gunshots wounds and died on the scene. Three other victims, aged between 11 and 26 also sustained gunshot wounds while the 5th victim, aged 19 did not sustain any injuries.
The unknown suspect fled the scene after the incident and the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage. A case of murder and 4 cases of attempted murder have been registered and are under investigation.
Police are calling on the community of Bethelsdorp to work together with the police to curb the callous shootings and attacks on innocent people in that area.
