A prosecutor who was arrested for corruption is amongst more than 300 suspects that are due to appear at the various Magistrate Court tomorrow on charges that includes murder, attempted murder, assault with grievous bodily harm, house robbery, possession of suspected stolen properties and drugs as well as possession of unlicensed firearm. A police officer will also be appearing at the Roodepoort Magistrate Court for an alleged murder of a taxi chairperson in Roodepoort on Thursday afternoon. Nineteen firearms (handguns) were also seized during crime prevention operations Buya Mthetho over the weekend.
The arrest of a police officer follows the killing of two taxi associations' chairpersons on Thursday in Lenasia South and Roodepoort. Following the shooting incident in Roodepoort, police followed information of a getaway vehicle and arrested a police officer and another at Impala Road in Protea. Two firearms including a service pistol were seized during an arrest. A gateway vehicle in which the police officer was the driver was impounded. In other two incidents of suspected mob justice three suspects were arrested for murder, two in Moroka and another in Thembisa. Two further suspects were arrested in Kagiso for murder.
A prosecutor dealing with a murder case in Bronkhorstspruit was also arrested for corruption and extortion. It is alleged that an offer was made to an investigating officer in an attempt to destroy evidence on a murder case. After police management became aware of this plot, an operation was initiated and the prosecutor was arrested following the transaction of cash to an investigating officer. Police seized a substantial amount of cash as an exhibit. The prosecutor is due to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate Court tomorrow whilst further investigations are continuing to establish as to how the prosecutor got the cash.
Twenty-two suspects will also be appearing at the various courts after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearms. Three of these suspects were arrested by the members of the Soweto Flying squad following a high speed car chase that ended up at sewer stream in Orlando West on Friday. The suspects allegedly threw two firearms inside the stream but police divers were summoned to the scene and recovered them. It was further established that the suspects 'vehicle was stolen at the Jeppe policing area. Other suspects were arrested for house robbery, possession of drugs, drunken driving, attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen property and assault.
Some of these arrests were effected during Buya Mthetho operations that are continuing throughout the Province by the integrated law enforcement agencies.
