Cash-in-transit robbery foiled in Mandeni, three suspects in custody

Yesterday, at 10:00, the Mandeni and Sundumbili SAPS members acted on an intelligence driven information about the suspects who were planning to commit a cash-in-transit robbery in one of the centres in Mandeni. A 37-year-old suspect was arrested at the entrance of the business premises and was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 27 live rounds of ammunition. The members spotted two vehicles a navy VW Golf and a Chevrolet Aveo at the centre. When the suspects saw the police they sped off. A VW Golf managed to flee the scene while the Chevrolet fled towards the Gcaleka area, Sundumbili where one of the suspects alighted from the vehicle, dropped the bag and fled the nearby bushes. Upon checking the bag, three unlicensed firearms were recovered with 14 live rounds of ammunition.

The members continued to search for the suspects and two aged 35 and 38 were arrested in the Sundumbili area. They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with 16 live rounds of ammunition. A Chevrolet vehicle was also seized by the police. The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they are linked to other robberies committed in Mandeni and other areas around the KwaZulu-Natal province. More arrests are imminent as investigations are still continuing. All the confiscated firearms will be subjected for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in commission of any other crime in the country.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal praised the members for apprehension of the suspects. I congratulate the members for averting the robbery by apprehending the culprits in possession of unlicensed firearms. We are pleased that no one was injured during the chase with suspects.
